The Babelsberg Media Innovation Centre (MIZ) has been promoting technically innovative projects with a focus on journalism and media in the areas of radio, TV and online for ten years. The "House of Innovations" connects media professionals, journalists and developers with innovation teams. The focus is on innovation transfer, i.e. the goal of developing new solutions and bringing them to the industry in order to secure and strengthen media diversity in Berlin-Brandenburg. MIZ is supported by Medienkompetenz und Innovationsförderung Berlin Brandenburg GmbH (mibb), a wholly owned subsidiary of Medienanstalt Berlin Brandenburg (mabb).
"We are convinced that media innovations are essential for ensuring media diversity. They are an important lever, for example, for shaping a future-proof, diverse local journalism. That's why the MIZ exists.
Dr. Eva Flecken | Director mabb
The focus of MIZ's work: development and transfer of media innovations
Since 2011, MIZ has funded over 50 innovation projects. These have resulted in new applications in the fields of data journalism, virtual and augmented reality (VR/XR), artificial intelligence (AI) and interactive storytelling. The teams have received almost 60 nominations and won prizes, and numerous successful cooperations with media companies have been established. In the area of education and training, MIZ works closely with ALEX Berlin and also regularly with universities as well as other educational institutions from Berlin-Brandenburg.
The MIZ also regularly offers events and workshops for journalists working in the media, which were most recently successfully implemented digitally against the backdrop of the Corona pandemic. The MIZ familiarises representatives of media companies with the solutions and applications of the MIZ project teams and encourages an exchange about media innovations.
"At MIZ we have the opportunity not only to look at technological developments in the media and journalism from the outside, but to directly accompany the change in the Berlin Brandenburg region. This is especially valuable in times of great crises of confidence. Innovations are not only important to create something new, but also to maintain the tried and tested and make it better.
Volker Bach | Managing Director of mibb GmbH and Head of MIZ
